Millwall's Pre season tour
of Canada....as reported by Junior Lions Chairman , Terry Burnett.........
1st game
"An
attendance of just over 500 with approximately 25 Millwall fans!
, the first game of the three game series, was played in a very
small stadium, on the edge of some great countryside.
This game was advertised as exhibition game and Millwall had had
a very hard training session in the morning. The game started off
at a low tempo. Millwall took the lead through Paul Ifill, who tried
his hardest to miss from six yards and score at the second attempt!!!!
Millwall's man of the match - Barry Cogan - got the second goal
just before the break.
Many changes were made by both sides in the second half. The game
seemed to be going through the motions. The oppostion livened up
and attacked the Millwall goal in search of the equaliser, but Millwall
'keeper Terry Masterton kept them out for a narrow victory"
2nd Game
"Over
3000 fans came from all over to watch our second game with more
Millwall fans making the long journey, along with many ex-pats ,
giving Millwall a good support.
The odd Man Utd and Chelsea shirt also appeared.
As soon as the game started, it was over for Millwall! A quick break
in the second minute lead to the Canadian goal, which was quickly
followed by the dismissal in the 5th minute of Matt Lawrence. Neil
Harris then had to make way for Joe Dolan, and that was the end
of Millwalls chances. 'Keeper Graham Stack pulled off some excellent
saves to keep the score down and even made a late appearance up
front as Millwall gave young Masterton another chance to impress.
The score was just about right, despite Millwalls late attempt."
3rd Game ( Hearts game) Score 1-1
"
This was Millwalls best display of the three game tour, played in
30 degrees heat that mirrored the first game of last season. Peter
Sweeny played one of his best games for Millwall , attacking and
running at players like he should. However, he had a touch of luck
with his goal when true to form, the Scottish 'keeper let a cross/shot
through his hands for an easy goal.
Right from the kick off, Hearts broke and Millwall old boy Phil
Stamp turned inside Dave Livermore and put a low cross into the
box. Millwall failed to clear and when a Hearts player fell in the
area under a challenge from Marvin Elliot, it was no suprise when
the referee pointed to the spot and after Stack was sent the wrong
, Hearts levelled.
Millwall made lots of changes at the start of the second half and
Marshall pulled off some fine saves to show that Millwall had again
two keepers to challenge for the number one spot.
Millwall shouldve been awarded a penalty when Barry Cogan was brought
down in the area but it was no suprise when it was not given as
Millwall seemed to take some of the referees we get in the footballleague
on tour with them as the standard was very poor!
Both teams continued to go for the winner but a draw was a fair
result for the travelling fans of both teams.
